starting the envelope system

We are starting the envelope system at our house as a budgeting tool. I had seen these very crafty pouches (and tutorial) and decided to make a few for our family. Three seemed like a good number to start with, but I soon realized that we need at least one more for "fun" activities. I don't have any alphabet stamps (I am adding that to my next "mom" purchase) so I decided to embroider them, but I have to say I like the stamp look better. Anyway, each of the pouches is made from both trifted clothing and my sewing scraps. The "mom" and "dad" pouches are for our weekly spending money (coffee, lunch, etc.) The grocery pouch is designed to help us curb our spending on unnecessary items at the grocery store, and so far it has worked really well!

  1. Great post on so many levels. The envelope system got us out of many a hole in our marriage, but pretty refashioned pouches are much more inspiring than the battered old envelopes that I used to shake upside down in the hope of finding a fiver! I may have to do it all over again, just to have an excuse to make and use more pretties!

  6. Great and creative "envelopes." I am curious how things are going now after a few years.. I have used this system with my children as well and because it has been so successful, have created an integrated system teaching children how to budget. My system teaches not only the value of money and why we need to budget, but teaches them how to use "envelopes" to do it. The system is located at www.kidbudget.com. I also agree that most of us need more than just three or four envelopes, especially as adults :).
